The castle is still the seat of the Earls of Cawdor, and the current home to the Dowager Countess Cawdor. However, many know this place as the setting for Duncan's murder in Shakespeare's Macbeth. Macbeth was the Thane of Cawdor and at one time there was a castle about a mile away of which nothing is left. While parts of the castle date back to the 14th century, it did not exist during the reign of the factual Duncan and Macbeth. The castle boasts a central keep and drawbridge, and was originally build around a small, living holly tree, the remains of which may still be seen in the lowest level of the tower. Originally consisting only of the large tower (or keep), the castle was expanded numerous times in the succeeding centuries, with significant additions made in the 17th century and 19th century. You'll begin your tour with the castle's spectacular gardens, then see its interior filled with rich tapestries, antique furniture and interesting paintings.

Dunrobin Castle has been home to the Earls of Sutherland since the 13th century. The Earldom of Sutherland is one of the seven ancient earldoms of Scotland and the Sutherlands were one of the most powerful families in Britain with many important matrimonial and territorial alliances. The Earldom of Sutherland was created in 1235 and a castle appears to have stood on the site since then, possibly beginning as an early medieval fort. The name Dun Robin means Robin's Hill or Fort in Gaelic and may have come from Robert, the 6th Earl of Sutherland who died in 1427.

A city driving tour of Inverness is an opportunity to gaze upon the city's celebrated historic sites. As your motorcoach wends its way through the streets, look for such notable structures as the impressive gothic-style Town House; the Georgian tollbooth steeple; Abertarff House, the oldest surviving house in Inverness, with crow-stepped gables; and Falcon Square, anchored by a statue of a unicorn with falcons flying. The sculptor was created by the world-famous sculptor Gerald Laing who lived in a castle which he renovated on the Black Isle. The Laura Ashley building was an old Victorian station building which was demolished. The bricks were then cleaned and the building rebuilt at a different angle.
