You’ll tour a pair of boutique wineries to taste and compare some of the Shiraz and other varietal wines that have made the Vale so internationally famous. Stunning coastal scenery is on the menu for the return drive as you visit stunning Maslin Beach – captured on the big screen in numerous films – and pass through Glenelg and tony shoreside suburbs en route back to Adelaide. Spend a delightful day in the Barossa Valley, vineyard-hopping to sample the wines and savor lunch in what many consider Australia’s premier wine-producing region. You’ll drive from the coast inland to survey the famous rolling Barossa landscape by panoramic coach, stopping to enjoy the mesmerizing valley-wide views from Mengler Hill lookout. As you then travel from wine estate to wine estate – there are over 150 in this region – you’ll not only taste their sumptuous wines but acquire knowledge about local history, grape varieties grown here, and the fine art of wine comparing. At one topnotch winery, you’ll settle in for a sumptuous two-course lunch – served in their highly regarded restaurant. Needless to say, you’ll also have an opportunity to sample some of the appealing vintages produced in their cellars. At another point during this relaxed afternoon, you’ll have an encounter with the unique natural acoustics of the curving Whispering Wall that retains Barossa Reservoir. An engineering feat completed in 1903, it earned its nickname when people discovered that anything whispered on one end could be clearly heard on the other, over 300 feet away. With your tastes well satisfied – and perhaps a few secrets shared sotto voce – you’ll return to the port.

Travel south to the Fleurieu Peninsula for a river cruise that brings you past spectacular dunes, beaches and birdlife in Coorong National Park. Wild scenery, casual lunch on board, entertaining and informative commentary, and a guided walk to the Great Southern Ocean all serve to make this experience much more than just another boat trip. The day starts with a scenic two-hour coach journey from Adelaide, traversing renowned winegrowing regions. Once back on board, cruise a bit further into the Coorong to see the dam and locks at Lake Alexandrina, then sip afternoon tea en route back to whence this delightful eco-adventure began.

Be introduced to Adelaide’s foremost sights by coach and on foot, with visits to a cultural museum, a historic botanic garden, and an interactive winemaking showplace. Affluent, committed to the arts and enormously proud, Adelaide offers much to be seen and admired. On an orientation drive through town, you’ll take in iconic landmarks like St Peters Cathedral, Festival Centre, Parliament House, and the Central Market. A walk from the National War Memorial along tree-lined North Terrace Boulevard brings you past other must-sees like the Art Gallery of South Australia and the State Library. Next door is the South Australian Museum, where you’ll step inside and discover a 3,000-piece collection in the Aboriginal Cultures Gallery and an entire opalized Plesiosaur skeleton in the Opal Fossils Gallery. Arriving at Adelaide Botanic Garden by coach, you’ll wander into the midst of a world-class flora collection with an exquisite glass-and-steel Palm House conservatory from 1878 as its centerpiece. After a while spent admiring leaves, fronds and flowers, you’ll shift your focus to grapes at the National Wine Centre, an interactive exhibition celebrating the history and current state of Australia’s world-renowned wine industry. Enjoy a brief tour and tutorial on wine tasting, then… taste some.

Enjoy a scenic orientation drive through Adelaide as you head for the hills outside town to soak up the timeless charm of Australia’s oldest German settlement. You’ll find Hahndorf much like any other quaint German hill village – just a lot further from the Black Forest. Thanks to careful restoration of many of its historic buildings, it’s a place where the 19th century never went out of fashion. With about two hours of free time here, you can stroll along tree-lined roads lined with charming cottages, churches and plenty of places to buy a strudel or shop for gifts and crafts. While Australia is famous for having been colonized by Englanders, German Lutherans emigrated to the Adelaide area in great numbers during the 1800s. Escaping religious persecution at home, they established a new home Down Under – and by the time of World War I, a tenth of all South Australians were of German descent. On the way back from Hahndorf, you’ll stop for breathtaking views from the lookout terrace at the summit of Mount Lofty, loftiest of the Adelaide Hills. In fair weather, you can see all the way to the coastal beaches. Though not as far as Düsseldorf.

Take an orientation spin through Adelaide, gaze in awe at the views from Mount Lofty, and share some up-close time with Australia’s most iconic fauna. The lush, leafy Adelaide Hills spread into wine country to the east of metropolitan Adelaide – and the narrated coach drive across the city and through natural bushland to get there is quite a scenic treat. But then, the real showstoppers on this excursion have fur, paws and pouches and hang out at Cleland Wildlife Park on the slopes of Mount Lofty. With two of hours to free-range around the venue’s natural environment, where the marsupials free-range around right with you, you’ll become personally acquainted with classic Aussie beasts like kangaroos, wallabies, potoroos – maybe even an emu or two. Less obviously cuddly but no less fascinating are the wombats, dingoes, and Tasmanian devils that live here too. Kudos to this sizable, sustainable place for bringing people and critters together for mutual observation since 1967. On the way back from the Park, you’ll drive to the lookout terrace on Mt Lofty’s summit. The panoramic views across the city skyline and to the coast from here are especially breathtaking on a clear day.

Try your hand at a therapeutic form of rhythmic music known to help align body and mind, then relax further on a sightseeing drive through Adelaide. You’ll head out from the pier to attend a session at a center that promotes the tonic effects of rhythmic drumming on physical, mental and spiritual health. You’ll learn how spiritual drumming can be a medium for self-realization, and feel your tensions release as you concentrate on the moment without regard for the past or future. During the scenic drive back to port, enjoy a refreshment stop and spot architectural highlights including Parliament House, St. Peter’s Cathedral and the Adelaide Oval, where cricket has been played since 1884.

Discover the natural beauty of the Albany coast and get a glimpse into the past by visiting Australia’s last whaling station. Along the way, you will pause for photos at the Gap and the Natural Bridge, two extraordinary rock formations sculpted by the forces of nature. Upon reaching Discovery Bay, you will visit Albany’s Historic Whaling Station, which closed in 1978, making it the last of its kind. After watching an enlightening film about the history of whaling, you will board the Cheynes IV, the world’s only preserved whale chaser ship, an experience that will offer a look into the lives of the whalers and how they processed the behemoths on the open decks. To help you understand how huge these creatures can grow, a skeleton of a blue whale is on display. You can also view a rare collection of scrimshaw, the artwork that whalers carved into whale bones during their leisure time.

Tour landmarks in and around Albany, concentrating in part on the vital role that the troops from Down Under played during World War I. You will first stop at a wind farm that generates electricity from a collection of eco-friendly wind turbines atop the coastal escarpments. The towering turbines supply about three-quarters of Albany’s electricity by using adjustable blades that capture the wind from any direction. Continuing on, you will see Dog Rock, a naturally formed boulder that looks like a giant dog’s head, and the Mount Clarence Memorial, a tribute to the soldiers of the Australia New Zealand Air Corps or ANZAC. Constructed on King George Sound, where 41,000 men and women departed to serve in World War I, the ANZAC Centre presents even more details about their sacrifices. While browsing the centre, which is located within the Princess Cruises Royal Fortress, you may see gun batteries, barracks and underground magazines used to store the propellant cordite.

Look for wildlife while cruising the sheltered waters of Oyster Harbour and enjoy a wine tasting at a Montgomery Hill Vineyard along the way. After boarding the vessel at Emu Point Landing, you will settle in for a relaxing journey around the harbor and up into the Kalgan River. The journey begins with a scenic drive through Tasmania’s lush landscapes to Gunns Plains Caves, where you’ll descend a 54-step stairway into a beautifully lit world of limestone formations. Your guide will illuminate fascinating details about the calcite shawls, flowstone formations, and even glowing bioluminescent worms that cling to the cavern walls. Above ground, visit Wings Wildlife Park, home to Tasmania’s largest collection of indigenous species. Here, you can wander trails to encounter Tasmanian devils, bettongs, quolls, and potoroos, along with other intriguing animals such as boobook owls and long-nosed potoroos.

The highlight will surely be the now-closed Fremantle Prison from 1855, the largest convict-built prison in Australia. It’s the only UNESCO World Heritage site in Western Australia. You will also see the even older Round House, which has 12 sides and only looks round, and Burswood Park, where you will pause for photos before continuing on to Fremantle’s twin city of Perth. With the Darling Ranges as a natural backdrop and much of the city overlooking the river, it is beautiful setting. Perth’s prosperity is evident throughout, but especially along Millionaire’s Row, which you will pass on the way to King’s Park, a serene oasis where you will enjoy free time.

Much of this district was constructed by British convicts that arrived in the 19th century. Ironically, they built their own prisons, including Fremantle’s oldest building, the Round House, which operated as a prison until 1886. You will also see Fremantle Prison, the only UNESCO World Heritage site in Western Australia., a designation it earned as a physical reminder of Europe’s colonial expansion through the presence and labor of convicts. Of course, there’s more to Fremantle’s past than prisons. The city is also full of Victorian and Edwardian architecture from its boom years, when gold and wheat drove the economy. Being on the water, Fremantle has a rich maritime history, much of it detailed in the Western Australian Maritime Museum. The best water views are from the Esplanade that hugs the coast.

Sometimes called blue, fairy or little penguins, the world’s smallest penguins measure just 13-inches high and weigh only two to three pounds. Each day the little penguins leave their burrows about an hour before sunrise and swim up to 62 miles before returning at dusk. Affectionately known as the Penguin Parade, the spectacle of watching these cute creatures waddle across the sand has been entrancing visitors since 1920. Arriving at Summerland Beach you’ll tour the Visitor Center where you’ll have ample free time to learn about the island's wildlife through a series of interactive and educational displays. An approximately 20-minute ferry crossing takes you to French Island. Only 49 miles from Melbourne, this little-known destination is a nature lovers’ dream. Your experienced guide will share knowledge of the natural environment and fascinating island history and lifestyle. Travel the island in an off-road vehicle for about 2-hours through forests, farmlands and historic sites. You will have time for photo stops and, if lucky, some wildlife spotting including koalas, echidnas and birds of prey. Weather permitting, you will stop at the beach to enjoy the vies and light refreshments before taking the ferry back to Phillip Island.

Please note: This tour travels through natural and bumpy terrain. There is minimal walking on this tour, but guests must be fit and in good physical condition to regularly get in and out of a large 4WD vehicle. French Island is wild, off the grid, has no roads and very little services.
