Santiago de los Caballeros, dubbed "the heart of the Dominican Republic," is the second-largest city in the Dominican Republic and one of its political, cultural and financial centers. Founded in 1495 during the first wave of European colonization of the New World, this picturesque city along the Yaque del Norte River showcases a fashionable city center and a vibrant arts and cultural scene.

Zip through the trees for bird's-eye views of the unspoiled beauty of the Dominican Republic at Country World, an ACCT-certified zip line park in Puerto Plata. This well maintained adventure park is nestled within 70 acres of fertile farmland with lush scenery and spectacular views. This is an exciting, eight platform zip line course, offering an adrenaline rush over the emerald canopy. Enjoy zip lining, with no need for active braking, like using gloves for stopping-you're guide does that for you. Traverse a total of more than 7,900 feet, or 1.5 miles, on reinforced galvanized steel cable. No experience is required. This activity requires appropriate shoes and pants or shorts that reach the knee.

Located in the rural community of Altamira, Chocal was formed in 2007 by a group of industrious women who were looking for the opportunity to work close to home and family. The Dominican Republic is a major world producer of cocoa and a leader in organic and Fair Trade cacao, much of which comes from small-scale farms. With the aid of machinery from the United States and training from European chocolatiers, the co-op now produces five kinds of organic chocolate bars – milk chocolate, orange flavored, one with cacao nibs, one with chocolate chips, and a 70% pure chocolate. The co-op is an important source of income for the Puerto Plata region, and volunteers are an integral part of the production process, helping the organization increase sales and thrive within the community.

Known for its sparkling beaches and rich history, Puerto Plata was discovered by Christopher Columbus in the 1490s. Columbus designed the town and established it as La Isabela, the first settlement in the Americas. In 1540, Fuerte de San Felipe, the first fort in the New World, was built, and today it anchors the city and stands as one of the oldest colonial period fortresses in the region. Puerto Plata's city center displays historic buildings, cultural museums, a seaside promenade, sparkling beaches, and plenty of restaurants and shopping.

This family friendly nature resort has something for everyone. Named for the four Mayan guardians that hold up each corner of the earth, the 400-acre jungle park alongside the Belize River is a natural habitat with over 200 species of tropical flora, including orchids, ferns, palms and towering hardwood trees. You can lounge in a hammock under the shade of a buttonwood tree or take a dip in the exotic free-form swimming pool with a water slide. One of the most diverse ecosystems in the world, the Belize Barrier Reef is comprised of 70 hard coral species and 36 soft coral species and is home to 500 species of fish, with many more still to be discovered. Charles Darwin described it as "the most remarkable barrier reef in the West Indies" in 1842. A large portion of the reef is protected by the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System and offers incredible diving and snorkeling opportunities. It was designated as a World Heritage Site in 1996 due to its spectacular beauty and ecological and biological significance.

Your knowledgeable tour guide will entertain you with interesting facts on the history culture, geography, flora and fauna of this very diverse country as you travel out of the city and 30 miles along the George Pirice Highway before arriving at the Zoo. The Belize Zoo is the perfect way to experience what the untamed jungles and savannahs have to offer. The Tropical Education Center was started in 1983 as an attempt to provide a home for various wild animals that had been featured in documentary films about the rainforest. From the very beginning, it was apparent that Belizeans were not familiar with the different species of wildlife that shared their country and all efforts were made to transform the little zoo into a dynamic wildlife education center. Today, the Belize Zoo covers approximately 29 acres of tropical savannah and features over 125 animal's native to Belize, many of which were found injured and nursed back to health. Enjoy the magnificent range of mammals, birds and reptiles from jaguars to howler monkeys, toucans to egrets and crocodiles to tree frogs, all in their natural habitat.
