Izumi, modeled after a traditional Japanese bath or “onsen” features indoor and outdoor Japanese bathing experiences, including steam rooms, saunas, and hot tubs with spectacular ocean views. Hakodate, a dormant volcano, rising to 334 meters at the end of the peninsula overlooking lush wooded scenery and panoramic vistas. Travel by motorcoach to the top of Mount Hakodate for 360-degree views that give an understanding of the shape of Hakodate. On its summit are monuments to Thomas W. Blakiston, who discovered that the Tsugaru Straits separate characteristic Honshu fauna from Hokkaido fauna, and to topologist Tadataka Inoh, who published the first survey map of Japan. Continue a comprehensive driving tour of the highlights of Hakodate, including the international Motomachi district; the reinvigorated red-brick warehouse; Goryokaku Fort, a Western-style citadel; hako and modern Goryokaku Tower. The cold waters of Hokkaido are renowned for producing fine seafood. At the Morning Market, vendors offer fresh fish as well as salmon roe, scallops, crab and sea urchin. The market boasts excellent fresh and dried produce. Restaurants and food stands offer a wide range of dishes for sale, including domburi topped with sea urchin.

Looking for a quick, yet unforgettable, overview of Hakodate from sea level to mountaintop? This captivating full day tour takes you from your ship to the highest point overlooking Hokkaido's third largest city. Imagine the panoramic views during your aerial tram ride, while gazing at the city from walking trails atop the 1,099-foot-high, heavily wooded mountain.

Your culturally rich day begins with a pleasant motorcoach ride to the Esashi district, one of the oldest areas in the Hokkaido Prefecture. Stop briefly in Assabu roadside Station to purchase refreshments and mementos before continuing on to the quaint fishing town.

Your day of discovery begins when you board a comfortable motorcoach for a short drive through Kushiro, known as "the misty city," to Kishiro Crane Reserve. Along the way, admire the coastal scenery and the lush wetlands.

walkways wind around the Hosooka Visitors Center and Observatory, which was designed to look like a tussock of grass common to the area. The pathways are dotted with numerous platforms set up to reveal spectacular views of the marsh and the Kashiro River as it meanders through the area at your feet. Learn about this complex ecosystem, which is home to thousands of plant and animal species, at the Visitors Center, where you can relax and buy souvenirs.

Your day of discovery begins when you board a comfortable motorcoach for a short drive through Kushiro, known as "the misty city," en route to Kushiro Crane Reserve where you will see why these magnificent birds have been designated as a Special Natural Living Treasure. Tancho-zuru, the Japanese red-crested crane, has been brought back from near extinction. The birds are fed in this facility that dedicated to their ongoing preservation. The bird is unmistakable, sporting a red crest, snowy white body, black neck and black-tipped wings. The cranes are strikingly beautiful and make wonderful subjects for photographs, so be sure to bring your camera. The facility is also a breeding facility, which has helped the population to thrive.

The largest city in eastern Hokkaido, Kushiro is affectionately called "The Town of the Mist" due to its climate and location facing the Pacific Ocean in the southeastern part of Hokkaido. Kushiro's main industry is deep-sea fishing, and marine production flourishes here in this charming town.

Two thousand spectacular varieties of plants and animals thrive in Kushiro, Japan's largest marshland and national park. Your ultimate experience allows you the luxury of discovering this vast area from three distinct vantage points.

Before heading for the Akan area, you will stop at the Kushiro Shitsugen observatory designated in the national park. Kushiro wetland is the largest wetland area in Japan and a haven for stunning and varied flora and fauna, some threatened by extinction. The marshland park extends over several communities and covers over 61,000 acres. More than 2,000 varieties of animals and plants thrive in Kushiro. Exploration of the park will delight the nature lover. If you have binoculars, bring them along and keep an eye out for Hokkaido deer, white-tailed sea eagles, Siberian salamanders (survivors of the last glacial age), and the Japanese huchen, a freshwater fish capable of reaching over three feet in length.

Your travels will take you to the heart of the city that came to international fame as the host city for the 1972 Winter Olympics, the first ever held in Asia. You'll stop at Odori Park, truly the city's "central park" that divides it into North and South. Originally designated as the main street, it eventually became a park spanning 13 blocks. Peruse its underground shopping town, elaborate gardens, promenades and pushcart vendors. The Sapporo TV Tower anchors one end of the park and the ski jump from the 1972 Winter Olympic is visible from the grounds. Throughout the year, many events and ceremonies are held here, such as the Sapporo Lilac Festival and the Sapporo Snow Festival that attracts millions of visitors each year. Climb the TV tower for some spectacular city views from its observation deck. (Weather Permitting)

Board your comfortable motorcoach and enjoy a scenic one-hour drive from Otaru to Sapporo, the prefectural capital and premier city of Hokkaido. Your day begins with a photo stop at the Sapporo Clock Tower, a short walk from Odori Park. Built in 1878 and originally used as the drill hall of Sapporo Agricultural College (now Hokkaido University), it is a symbol of this great city and is designated an Important Cultural Asset by the Japanese government. Architectural enthusiasts will be interested in the fact that the tower's balloon frame was a popular style in the United States at the time. But the calligraphy that is brushed on the wood panel entranceway lends a decidedly Japanese flair. The pendulum clock, made by the Howard Clock Co. of Boston, was installed in October 1881, and the bell's sound has been selected as one of Japan's One Hundred Best Sounds.

What better way to begin your day of discovery than a visit to the Former Aoyama Villa or the Nishin Goten (Herring Mansion). During the Meiji and Taisho eras (1868-1926), herring fisheries prospered, making many successful. The villa was the home of an Otaru herring fishery boss and was constructed in 1923 over the course of six years. The miyadaiku (carpenters specializing in shrines and temples) worked painstakingly to create this lavish two-story wooden structure. Step inside and admire the finely lacquered floors, the gleaming whitewashed walls, and zelkova (an Asian tree) corridors. Note the intricacy of the sliding doors, which are adorned with the works of the premiere painters and calligraphers of the day.
