The iconic Kamo River, Heian Shrine, Toji Temple and modern Kyoto Tower can be seen from the motorcoach.

Built in 711, it's one of Kyoto's oldest and celebrated shrines. Dedicated to Inari, the Shinto god of rice, sake, and prosperity, the Shrine is most famous for its 10,000 brilliant red gates that arch over a pathway that leads through a forest and up to a hilltop overlooking Kyoto.

Then "Temple of the Golden Pavilion," Kinkakuji Temple is a landmark and symbol of Kyoto. The main building, a three-story pavilion covered in gold leaf, was originally the retirement villa of the shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu but was made a Zen temple after his death in 1408. Surrounded by peaceful gardens, thoughtfully laid out around a central pond, Kinkakuji is designated as a National Special Historic Site, a National Special Landscape, and a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site. The garden is a perfect example of classical Muromachi-period garden design, which emphasized the harmonious integration of buildings with their surroundings.

Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Nijo Castle is the best surviving example of castle architecture of Japan's feudal era in the 17th century. It's easy to fall under the spell of this magical place. Built almost entirely out of cypress, the extravagant interiors are lavished with gold leaf and elaborate woodcarvings. For the shogun's protection, the builders of Nijo Castle constructed what's known as "nightingale" floors; if an intruder entered the corridors, the floors would squeak like birds. Some of the rooms in the castle also feature special doors and secret rooms where bodyguards would hide.
