Langkawi is an archipelago of 99 tropical islands (with five more revealed at low tide!) off the northwestern coast of mainland Malaysia. As the first Southeast Asian landmass to rise from the seabed more than half a billion years ago, the islands have a spectacular geological landscape, which includes caves, sea-arches, ancient fossils, flat plains, forested mountains, and dramatic limestone and sandstone outcroppings. It is also a land of myths and folklore, and many towns, mountains and other natural features have an origin story based in legend.

You'll continue to Laman Padi. Translated "Rice Garden," the museum is a tribute to the staple diet of rice in almost all of Asia. Here, you'll experience a sampling of anything that goes into the cultivation, nurturing and harvesting of rice ("padi"). You'll see and touch tools like fish traps made of bamboo and replicas of traditional rice-based foods.

Malaysia produces almost 20% of the world's natural rubber. Next, you will see a traditional Malaccan house-a splendid showcase of Malacca's 19th-century architectural and artistic style. Stop briefly for photos and souvenir shopping outside the Stadthuys. Built as the official residence for the Dutch governors and their officers, the Stadthuys is an excellent example of Dutch period architecture. Continue to visit the Porta de Santiago-a Portugese-built fortress-and St Paul's Church, where missionary St Francis Xavier was briefly interred in 1553. You will also view the Sultan's Palace-a replica of the original 15th-century palace of Malacca's now-extinct Sultanate. The palace houses the Culture Museum. Pause to snap some photos at the Straits Mosque before returning to the ship.

Melaka's appeal lies in its rich and colourful past. Every step of your walking tour will you take down narrow, winding streets, where you will find a historical nugget waiting to be discovered or an enchanting story to be told. The first landmark you'll see today is the Stadthuys. Built as the official residence for the Dutch governors and their officers, it is an excellent example of Dutch period architecture. Proceed to Porta de Santiago, built by the Portuguese in 1511 as a fortress. It sustained severe structural damage during the Dutch invasion, and when the British took over Malacca they set out to destroy it. A timely intervention by Sir Stamford Raffles in 1808 preserved the remains you will see today. Another point of interest is St Paul's Church, built by the Portuguese. The Dutch then came along and turned the chapel into a burial ground. Your next stop is at the Cheng Hoon Teng Temple-the oldest Chinese temple in the country. You'll also head to the Old Town to visit the Baba & Nyonya Heritage Museum, for an insight into the culture originating from the inter-marriage of local brides with Chinese immigrants. Continue to Kampong Morten to see a living Malay museum, and finish up at the Villa Sentosa where tea and traditional cakes will be served.

Once an old spice centre for Eastern and Western traders, Malacca boasts a colourful history of forged by Malay Sultans, European powers and the formation of multi-cultural communities. Each of these impressive historical eras has each left its own indelible heritage and influence. Walk back through time as you discover the great empires of Malacca-the Malay Sultanate, the Portuguese, the Dutch and the British. Stopping at Dutch Square, you'll see the Stadthuys, built as the official residence for the Dutch governors and their officers-an excellent example of Dutch period architecture. Christ Church, standing tall since 1753, is another contribution of the Dutch who defeated the Portuguese in 1641. You will visit the Dutch Dining Room and Dutch Bakery at the History & Ethnography Museum. As you walk up to St Paul's Hill you will see the ruins of St Paul's Church, where missionary St Francis Xavier was briefly interred in 1553. See the Portuguese fortress as you descend hill and view the replica of the Malacca Sultan's Palace, built with great detail and refinement. Finally, you'll head back to the pier in a rickshaw.
